The much-loved and eagerly anticipated St John's Pancake Race took pace on Tuesday 24 February, blessed with blue skies and not a drop of rain. The first recorded race - noted in The Johnian Magazine - dates back to 1973. Originially a competition solely for prefects, the event has since evolved into a whole-school celebration. In 2009, the format was transformed to open the competition up to all houses and year groups - a structure that remains in place today.
Teams of four sprint around the Quad, navigating designated changeover and pancake-flipping stations along the route. Watchful marshals ensure fair play throughout, keeping a close eye on technique - particularly the quanitity and quality of each flip - with any breach of the rules risking elimination.
